When did you first begin reading ASOIAF? Who introduced it to you?

I was tricked into starting this addictive series. I co-worker told me that is was a 3 book series, all completed. A friend had given me AGOT, but I didn't want to start another never ending series. Anna promised to lend me the next two, that it was 3 books just like Lord of the Rings. Then when I finished the third, I was like "what the F@*$%^" and she nonchalantly stated, "yea, I lied. But I thought it would be fun to have someone to talk about the books with, and you wouldn't have started them otherwise." I wouldn't have, and I wouldn't be anxiously awaiting the next book for years, damn you Alabama Anna!

I was first introduced to ASOIAF in the summer of 2004. I was hiking in central Oregon and taking a short break. Someone hiking the other way took a similar rest and we got to talking briefly. I don't even remember the guys name, but when he heard I liked fantasy, he told me I *HAD* to read ASOIAF by George RR Martin.

Well, the strength of his recommendation stuck with me. One and a half years later (winter 2006), when I was looking for a new book to read, I searched for the series online. Fortunately I remembered the words Ice and Fire and as you can imagine, I was able to find it easily.

Whomever you are, thanks for the tip!

1997 I think.

I was sitting in one of Cisco Systems field offices waiting for a demo of their IP phone system. I took along one of the hardcover editions of Robert Jordan's WOT series and was reading it while waiting.

Some guy in a suit walks past the waiting room and does a double take. This guy looks about 10 years older than me and looks like a banker.

He comes in and starts telling me all about George RR Martin and a Game of Thrones and how he totally kicks Jordan's ass.

We talk for a minute and the guy whips out his business card and writes down the name of the book and author on the back of it.

The guy went on for like 10 minutes about how great Martin is and how awesome GOT is, I just had to give it a shot.

I probably would have forgotten about it but as luck would have it I drove past a Barnes & Noble on the way back to work, and decided to stop and get it while it was fresh in my mind.

Thank God I did...I've never looked back and after finishing GOT had a real hard time getting back into WOT.

I started in 2005, when a friend had given me a burned CD with AGoT on it that he had downloaded from a torrent. At the time i listened to a lot of "books on tape" (more like books on mp3) at work, as my work doesn't require much attention.

I promptly plugged the files into my mp3 player and began listening. However it stopped after the part with Jon and Tyrion on the wall when Tyrion thinks ""And who will go find you?" He shivered"" then a soothing British voice tells me this has been AGoT by GRRM Random house inc ect ect.

Well, I was hooked but a little let down at (what I thought was) the ending. I decided I'd head off to B&N to pick up the series in paper back (I'd much rather read it than hear it) when I arrived home books in hand I thought "That British fella' sure reads through these fast. This are much bigger than I thought."

Then I began reading AGoT, imagine my surprise when I discovered an entire half of the book I didn't know existed.
